Intro draft (working on)

Topic 1

I am not quite a journalism major yet. I am also interested in music. They seem equally non lucrative.

Larger picture, I want to try and use my creativity to share people's stories, maybe also using audio and visuals, as I am interested in film and I think podcasts could be a whole lot better than they usually are.

I want to improve my interviewing skills.  Asking strangers questions is tricky.

I am interested in several different artistic fields. I am looking to change paths and make more creative work. Hopefully get some sort of an audience and try to incorporate this into a profession.

I am taking this course because I think it will help me with my writing and have practical application to communicate information.

Topic 2.

I would like to get more practice interviewing. I am much more comfortable writing independently. But I think people could be more interested in hearing the words and thoughts of others. I think once I get over the initial awkwardness of approaching and starting the talk, I have the potential to get into interesting conversations.

I think it will be a real test for my writing skills to try and put my spin on more typical basic hard news. Honestly, I'm not sure how I will do with these kinds of assignments. When I am writing purely fiction, in the past I have fussed over and over worked pieces. The straightforward nature of the topics and having deadlines will help me not get so precious and perfectionistic.

I would also like to learn bigger picture, how it all comes together. I've only worked on individual articles without knowing the full scope of an entire published issue. Learning about different sections/ topics would be helpful. I'd like to try some other story topics than I have in the past.

I have 2 story ideas that so far haven't developed further. There is the radio club. I briefly talked with the founder with plans to talk more next week. They haven't established the club details this term, but said would have more details next week. They also have a podcast, which might be interesting to cover. I would like to talk to other members and probably go to a meeting.

I tried to go to the International office, but no one was there. I will try again. From the outside, the office looked small, so I don't know that 5 people work there.

I would love to talk to some international students about where they are from, their experience at LB and Oregon and how things are different from back home and what they expected. Also, how international politics are a hot button.
