2026 SLC Election Candidate Profile – Vayne Lim

I chose to come to LBCC because it’s more flexible. Especially with the two-year system. I also came to LBCC because of the ease of transferring to OSU. I think it’s pretty good with civil engineering, which I’m going for. Plan A would be something to do with urban planning, municipal engineering. Plan B would be material science, if I don’t get into that.

It’s actually better than expected. Because a lot of people have been saying, oh, community college is not how people expect college to be like. But because I’m putting myself (out there) and getting involved in many things like SLC, it has not been boring at all, and I really enjoy it right now. But college, you know, ups and downs. I am starting to feel a bit nervous about homework and all that. I expect everything will get harder. I would like the challenge, but I do feel tired sometimes.

For my next term, I already checked out the course schedules. I have to wake up around probably 6 to commute to Albany from Corvallis by bus. One of the classes starts at 1. But there’s a huge gap. I would end at 8:30. I view it as an opportunity (for time for the vice president role for SLC).

Before I even really applied to LBCC, I was already looking all over, what things I can get involved in? I checked out all the clubs. I was really hoping to get into any roles in the SLC. I didn’t really think of joining as a vice president, but then I saw the application form and I was like, you know what? If I’m going big, I’m going big. I saw the application and I took my chance. Here I am.

I’m working on some things with the international office as well. I am a part of the gardening club. I have tabled once with them. I have helped them mulch a bit at the vineyard and it was labor intensive. There’s a lot of opportunities. There’s a lot of planning going into it. They just need a lot of people volunteering. People need to join in to work out all the projects they have in mind. Sometimes we go into the heated greenhouse. It’s pretty big inside. The first time I went in I was like, whoa.

I have been really big on food these days. If I didn’t have to worry about money I would be buying ingredients and cooking or splurging on massages. Maybe decorating the house. Passions? Probably something with cooking, decorating, eating or gardening.

The main thing I want to focus on if I do become a vice president would be more on the visibility for clubs, activities and benefits that LBCC students are entitled to. I have talked to a few people around campus and I’ve noticed that they don’t really know what’s really happening. I think more on visibility and what the SLC is actually doing as well. I’ve talked to a few professors of mine. They also don’t really know what’s going on with the SLC. Other students, my classmates, they have no idea what the SLC is doing.

If I want them to get involved, I would probably tell them that they can get a lot of opportunities out of the SLC. Especially with the talent grants. If they’re coming to a community college and they want to save up some money, and if they’re not really under any of the grants that the government gives, it’s a good opportunity to lower your school fees. Also, it’s a good learning opportunity for students if they want to add something to their resume.

I feel like a lot of people in community colleges go for practical things. I have been part of leadership roles in my past, like high school. I can create some sort of engagement with people. I wouldn’t mind reaching out to people physically, in person. More in-person advertising, in-person sales type of thing. Face to face. Go directly to the people, like did you know about this? They could be more enthusiastic about SLC (and clubs), it’s very passive, not reaching out to people. But not everyone is an extrovert.

I just want them to know that they can get school fee waivers if they join the SLC.

Hey, there’s this thing, did you know about it? Do you know that you can get three credits off if you get 100 hours of volunteer work with the gardening club? Some people have gotten some interest by me saying that.  I think in some ways I could create some type of engagement for students, my energy that I give out for events and everything.
