SLC candidates urge LBCC students to get involved and vote
Did you know there is a student leadership election? Did you know voting has already started?
An email was sent to students to vote in the Student Leadership Council elections. Jaxon Lee, Lia Schmeck, and Rebecca Thomas are running for president. The vice president candidates are Vayne Lim, Jaymie Poujade, and Ross Zinck. (Profiles of the candidates are on The Commuter website under Campus News.)
“Student leadership, we’re relatively unknown. Students might be familiar with things that we do, but not really who does them. Like, in the restrooms we have the Porcelain Posts and that’s something that student leadership does,” said presidential candidate Schmeck.
“Or like the vending machines, it was SLC who made that donation to get the vending machines on campus, but they might not know who SLC or student leadership is.
“I think that’s important, knowing what you pay for and knowing who we are, because we try to provide these services that are made to support the students.”
“I’ve talked to a few professors of mine,” vice presidential candidate Lim said. “They also don’t really know what’s going on with the SLC. Other students, my classmates, they have no idea what the SLC is doing.”
“What surprised me was the size and the retention rate (of the SLC),” presidential candidate Thomas said.
“People want to be there, and they want to help. As for what students may not know, they maybe don’t know that the president and vice president do spend a significant amount of time talking to upper leadership in the college for the changes that we want to make. We really do. We’re out there,” Thomas continued. “We’re talking to people that are (high) up and trying to make changes. So it’s scary for sure, but we do it because we want the student experience to be better.”
Schmeck said, “A big part of the presidential role is communicating with the board of education. They’re the bridge in between what students have to say and our administration and executive level of things.”
“The (Associated Students of LBCC) constitution,” said presidential candidate Lee, “a student body constitution that basically lays out all of the protections, rights, and services guaranteed to you by the institution and by the SLC. And this is all public information. If anybody would like to go and look at any of those rules, it’s all on the website. You have access to it. Feel free to run through it. I actually implore you to if you are a student, just so that you can better understand your protections and rights.”
“I want them (students) to understand what’s happening,” said Poujade, who is running for vice president. “A lot of people do not realize that they can attend a lot of these public meetings. I’d like to see that better displayed. The SLC meetings are open to the public.”
“Younger generations I actually feel like are willing to be uncomfortable and make the changes that they want to see. So I actually feel like we’re swinging back into where younger people are getting more involved. Being an intern is a great way to get involved,” Thomas said.
The SLC wants you to get involved. Students have until noon Friday, Feb. 13, to vote.
